Prue McKay

About Prue

Prue is a conservator of works of art on paper, documents, and photographs. After graduating from the University of Canberra with a degree in Conservation of Cultural Materials, Prue was employed by the National Archives of Australia in their preservation section for a total of over 15 years. She also worked for several years as the conservator for the library, rare book, and manuscript collections at AIATSIS. Now working in private practice, Prue continues to apply and develop her skills and knowledge in paper and photograph conservation and preventive aspects of collection care such as storage and collection management.

Prue paints watercolours in her spare time, including creating illuminated initials and miniatures in the Victorian gothic and medieval styles. She tries to use materials as faithful as possible to those that would have been used originally, making the paints from pure pigments, gum arabic and water, and painting on both parchment and paper.
